A MARKOV CHAIN ANALYSIS OF PORK FARM SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS IN THE SOUTH AgEcon
Disney, W. Terry; Duffy, Patricia A.; Hardy, William E., Jr..
Concerns over declining farm numbers, shifts in farm size distribution, and associated infrastructural problems have led to a heightened awareness of structural considerations within policy making circles. Future policy decisions will have substantial structural consequences for the agricultural industry. Often, however, the indirect effects of grain pricing policies on the livestock sector have been overlooked in these policy decisions. The incorporation of price effects into a Markov chain analysis of pork farm size distributions and the simulation of those projections to the year 2000 under various price scenarios should provide some insight into the future structure of livestock farming in the South.

A METHOD FOR EVALUATING SUPPLY RESPONSE TO PRICE UNDERWRITING AgEcon
Fraser, Rob W..
In this paper a method for evaluating the supply response of individual producers to a price underwriting scheme is presented. The method includes precise formulae to take account of the impact of price underwriting on the producer's uncertain conditions. The Australian Wheat Board's guaranteed minimum price scheme is taken as a specific example of price underwriting in practice. Results show the scheme to lead to only relatively small supply responses. The impact on producer behaviour of an increase in price uncertainty in the presence of an underwriting scheme is also demonstrated in the paper.

A MICROCOMPUTER MODEL FOR IRRIGATION SYSTEM EVALUATION AgEcon
Williams, Jeffery R.; Buller, Orlan H.; Dvorak, Gary J.; Manges, Harry L..
ICEASE (Irrigation Cost Estimator and System Evaluator) is a microcomputer model designed and developed to meet the need for conducting economic evaluation of adjustments to irrigation systems and management techniques to improve the use of irrigated water. ICEASE can calculate the annual operating costs for irrigation systems and has five options that can be used to economically evaluate improvements in the pumping plant or the way the irrigation system is used for crop production.

A MODEL TO EXPLAIN PARTICIPATION IN NEW YORK'S AGRICULTURAL DISTRICTS AND USE-VALUE ASSESSMENT PROGRAMS AgEcon
Boisvert, Richard N.; Bills, Nelson L.; Bailey, Elizabeth.
Logit regression models are estimated to identify factors affecting decisions to enroll farmland in New York's agricultural districts program and participate in the use-value assessment program. The results suggest that the districts law is consistent with preserving the best farmland at the rural-urban fringe and that the decision to enroll in agricultural districts affects in a recursive fashion the decision to participate in the use-value assessment program. Short-term monetary gains are the overriding considerations in applying for use-value exemptions. This may lead to additional erosion of the tax base via tax preferences for agricultural land.

A new eel larva, Leptocephalus pseudomicrocephalus, belonging to the subfamily Bathymyrinae (Anguilliformes, Congridae) Naturalis
Utrecht, W.L. van.
An eel larva, caught in the mid North Atlantic, represents a new species and is described as Leptocephalus pseudomicrocephalus. In most of its characters it resembles the larvae of the Ariosoma-Bathymyrus group, especially in the pigmentation and the presence of an outer intestine or exterilium. The main differences are the greater length and the number of myomeres.

A new genus and species of Tantulocarida (Crustacea: Tantulocarida) parasitic on a harpacticoid copepod from the Skagerrak OMA
Huys, R.; Boxshall, G..
The new genus and species. Boreotuntulus kunzi, is described from Cylindropsyllus laevis, caught off the isle of Bonden, Bohaslän, Skagerrak. It is placed in the Deoterthridae on the basis of its larval characters. It can be distinguished form other genera by the presence of a distinct praecoxal segment carrying the endite on larval thoracopods2 to 5. This is the second tantulocaridan to be recorded in Scandinavian waters.

A NONPARAMETRIC ANALYSIS OF CONSUMER PREFERENCES FOR FRESH MEAT PRODUCTS AgEcon
Moen, Daniel S.; Capps, Oral, Jr..
Nonparametric statistical methods (the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's multiple comparison procedure) were used to analyze consumer preferences for fresh meat products (chicken, beef steak, beef roast, fish, ground beef, pork, turkey, and lamb) in a retail food chain in Houston. On a pairwise basis, significant differences in ratings were evident for the majority of the fresh meat products in terms of frequency of purchase as well as taste and quality. In particular, chicken was not only the most frequently purchased fresh meat product but also compared favorably to all meat items in terms of taste and quality.

A note on the seasonally shifting zone of high primary production in the Bay of Marajó, Pará, Brazil, 1983-1984 Acta Botanica
Schwassmann,H.O; Barthem,R.B; Carvalho,M.L.
To understand the hydrological and limnological conditions during the annual regime of high and low river flow, as well as the action of the tides, a series of 18 collecting trips were conducted in monthly and bimonthly intervals across the Bay of Marajó during the years 1983-1985. The Tocantins River provides more than 80% of the inflow into this bay and shows a much greater difference in water volume flow between high and low water season than the Amazon. The annual displacement of brackish water influence is thus more extensive Marajó Bay than in the Amazon estuary. During the dry season of low river discharge (September-December), traces of seawater are found to penetrate up to 90 km upriver in the Guamá River. The high degree of turbidity of inner...

A POSITIVE ROLE FOR GRADUATE AGRIBUSINESS PROGRAMS IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AgEcon
Robbins, Lynn W..
Agribusiness graduate students should do problem-solving and take business courses to understand the environment in which they will practice their theory. The longer we wait to teach them application, the greater are the chances of losing our critical mass in terms of relevancy and political support. We can, and should, cultivate a broader range of agribusiness problems and clientele groups. We can effect change immediately by doing more agribusiness research. We can assure our long-run existence through a stronger political support base by educating our graduate students in the ways of firm-level agribusiness application.

A proposed Pleistocene/Holocene lake in the Amazon basin and its significance to Amazonian geology and biogeography Acta Amazonica
Frailey,Carl D.; Lavina,Ernesto Luiz; Rancy,Alceu; Souza Filho,Jonas Pereira de.
Recent studies have described widespread statigraphic units of Late Pleistocene and Holocene age in the western part of the Amazon Basin. The recognition of deltaic sedimentation in the uppermost these units near Rio Branco, Brazil, at a modern elevation of approximately 500 feett leads to the conclusion that this area was situated on the edge of a large Amazonian lake that existed in the recent past when Andean tectonism caused active downwarping of the western edge of the Amazon Basin. The ramifications of this "Lago Anazonas" hypothesis extend into every area of modern Amazonian geology and biology.
